This project involved developing an integrated brand storytelling and content marketing campaign for the Garmin inReach Mini 3, a satellite communication device designed for outdoor enthusiasts who require reliable connectivity beyond mobile network coverage. The aim was to demonstrate how strategic storytelling can communicate a brand's value proposition by creating authentic, audience-focused content that aligns with organisational goals.

Through a combination of brand analysis, audience research, creative storytelling, and content development, the project explored how compelling narratives can strengthen brand engagement across multiple digital channels. The final portfolio included a brand audit, customer personas, a storyboard, campaign mock-ups, performance evaluation, and ethical reflection, demonstrating the integration of strategic thinking with creative execution.

Business Context

Garmin is a global leader in GPS navigation and outdoor technology, recognised for developing reliable products that support exploration, safety, and adventure. The Garmin inReach® Mini 3 extends this reputation by providing satellite communication capabilities that enable users to stay connected in remote environments where traditional mobile networks are unavailable.

In a competitive outdoor technology market, product specifications alone are often insufficient to differentiate a brand. Purchasing decisions are also influenced by trust, emotional connection, and the ability of consumers to relate to real-life experiences. Storytelling provides an opportunity to move beyond technical features by demonstrating how the product creates value in authentic situations, helping customers visualise its role in enhancing safety, confidence, and outdoor exploration.

This project explored how a strategic storytelling approach could strengthen Garmin's brand communication by creating engaging content tailored to the needs, motivations, and experiences of its target audience across multiple digital channels.

Project Deliverables

The project combined strategic analysis, creative content development, and reflective evaluation to demonstrate how brand storytelling can support marketing objectives. The portfolio brought together a range of deliverables that collectively formed an integrated storytelling campaign for the Garmin inReach Mini 3.

Brand Audit & Audience Insights

Before developing the campaign, Garmin's brand positioning and target audience were analysed to ensure the storytelling strategy aligned with both customer needs and organisational objectives. The analysis highlighted Garmin's reputation for innovation, reliability, and outdoor adventure, while demonstrating the importance of combining technical excellence with authentic storytelling.

Brand Audit

  • Core Narrative: Performance, authenticity and utility.

  • Brand Positioning: A trusted technology partner that enables safer and more confident outdoor adventures.

  • Content Strategy: A combination of inspirational storytelling and educational content delivered through the POEM framework.

  • Channel Approach: Platform-specific content tailored to different audiences while maintaining a consistent brand identity.

Audience Insight

The campaign targeted outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventure, safety and confidence in remote environments. Audience personas were developed to understand their motivations, challenges and behaviours, ensuring the storytelling remained relevant, authentic and customer-centred.

Primary campaign persona
Campaign Objectives
  • Increase Brand Awareness by introducing the Garmin inReach Mini 3 to outdoor enthusiasts through compelling storytelling.

  • Strengthen Brand Engagement by creating content that encourages emotional connection and audience interaction.

  • Demonstrate Product Value by showcasing real-life scenarios where the device enhances safety and confidence.

  • Build Brand Trust by communicating Garmin's commitment to reliability through authentic customer-focused narratives.

Storytelling Strategy

The campaign adopted a storytelling approach to transform the Garmin inReach Mini 3 from a technical device into a trusted companion for outdoor adventures. Rather than focusing solely on product specifications, the content highlighted real-life situations where the device could provide confidence, safety, and peace of mind in remote environments. This approach aimed to create an emotional connection with the audience while reinforcing Garmin's brand values of reliability, innovation, and exploration.

Storytelling Approach

  • Authenticity: Used realistic outdoor scenarios that resonated with the target audience.

  • Emotion: Focused on confidence, adventure, and peace of mind rather than technical features alone.

  • Customer-Centred Narrative: Positioned the user as the central character, with the Garmin inReach® Mini 3 supporting their journey.

  • Consistent Brand Messaging: Ensured all campaign assets reflected Garmin's values of reliability, safety, and exploration

Campaign Assets

The campaign translated the storytelling strategy into three complementary content assets, each designed to support a different stage of the customer journey. Every asset was selected based on audience behaviour, platform characteristics, and the role it could play in strengthening Garmin's brand engagement.

  1. The storyboard

  1. Instagram Reel

Objective

Generate awareness by capturing attention through an immersive, story-driven short-form video.

Strategic Rationale

Instagram Reels were selected for the awareness stage of the customer journey due to their ability to reach large audiences through engaging, mobile-first video content. Rather than introducing the product immediately, the Reel follows Sam, the campaign persona, as he navigates a challenging hiking environment. The story builds curiosity and emotional engagement before naturally introducing the Garmin inReach® Mini 3 as the solution. This approach aligns with Garmin's audience preference for experience-based storytelling, supported by the strong engagement observed in the brand's YouTube content analysis.

Marketing Objective: Awareness & Engagement

  1. Influencer-Style Blog Article

Objective

Support the consideration stage by building trust through authentic storytelling.

Strategic Rationale

The blog article was designed to provide a deeper, more personal narrative that demonstrates the practical value of the Garmin inReach Mini 3. Instead of adopting a promotional tone, the content focuses on a genuine outdoor experience, allowing the product to become part of the story rather than its sole focus. To maximise relevance and credibility, the article was positioned on a niche outdoor website rather than Garmin's corporate blog, enabling the campaign to reach an audience already interested in hiking and adventure activities.

Marketing Objective: Consideration & Trust Building

  1. Facebook visual

Objective

Support the consideration stage by building trust through authentic storytelling.

Strategic Rationale

Garmin's Facebook content analysis identified relatively low engagement, suggesting that existing posts relied heavily on product-centric messaging. To address this, the campaign proposed a minimalist visual inspired by the iconic OREO "You can still dunk in the dark" campaign. The creative concept depicts Sam as a small figure within a vast mountain landscape alongside the message "You can still chat here." By shifting the emphasis from product features to reassurance, connection, and safety, the visual aims to create a stronger emotional response while subtly reinforcing the device's satellite communication capabilities.

Marketing Objective: Engagement & Brand Reinforcement

Measurement Framework

As this project proposed a storytelling campaign rather than implementing one, a measurement framework was developed to evaluate its potential effectiveness. Relevant KPIs—including reach, engagement rate, video views, average engagement time and click-through rate—were selected to assess awareness, audience engagement and content performance if the campaign were executed.

Skills Demonstrated

Challenges

A key challenge was developing a compelling storytelling strategy that effectively communicated the value of a satellite communication device while remaining authentic and customer-centred. The campaign needed to inspire confidence, adventure and preparedness without relying on fear-based messaging, ensuring the narrative aligned with Garmin's brand values across all campaign assets.

Key Learning

This project reinforced the importance of combining strategic thinking with creative storytelling to deliver meaningful customer experiences. It demonstrated that effective digital marketing is not simply about promoting product features, but about understanding audience motivations, building authentic connections and selecting the right content formats to communicate value consistently across multiple digital channels.
