Turning automotive experience into green skills ideas

Work Activities

During my sixth week at GetZero, I focused on identifying opportunities to connect my automotive experience with the organisation's green skills mission.

I developed an initial proposal for an electric vehicle (EV) skills workshop aimed at introducing young people to career opportunities within the automotive sector. The concept explored practical activities, including vehicle maintenance, high-voltage systems and emerging EV technologies.

Given programme budget constraints, I considered a half-day format and potential collaboration with Cenex to make the initiative more achievable.

Alongside this, I contributed to LinkedIn social listening activities, monitoring organisations such as Morgan Sindall and Axis CLC to identify relevant conversations and potential partnership opportunities.

Personal Reflection

This week represented an important step towards applying my previous professional experience within a new industry context.

Having spent several years managing an automotive workshop, I recognised that the EV transition creates opportunities beyond charging infrastructure, including maintenance, repair and specialist technical skills.

Developing the workshop concept helped me understand how practical industry knowledge can contribute to educational programme design.

However, I also recognised that a promising idea must be supported by realistic budgets, suitable partners and clearly defined learning outcomes.

The social listening activities reinforced the importance of understanding potential partners' priorities before initiating conversations.

Moving forward, I aim to refine the workshop proposal and explore how GetZero could build partnerships that connect automotive expertise with accessible green career pathways.
